wishfulclicking: cassette means I love the music (music: mixtape is love)
I was talking with my friend and she mentioned she wanted a Robots and Love mix for something she's working on; and we all know that I can't resist a mix, so here is a mini mix--5 songs total--about Robots and Love.

Put your music player on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. yes, this is one of my favorite memes

There's no way to temper your thirst
Little old man,
there's a place in your heart
tired of waiting, tired of hiding.

How many special people change?
Oh love, you were a sickly child.
When Jack was born, he winked at mom
Look at all that which surrounds me.

One time in your life
overprescribed.
This is my first wedding,
what's the matter Mary Jane?

Who wants to be right as rain?
I hate it when you say you need me.
There's a song that's inside of my soul.
Saw you the other day.

How do you drive this thing?
Well, I had a dream I stood beneath an orange sky.
Keep the noise low.
You'll never make me stay.

Day 08 - A song that you know all the words to
Written in Reverse by Spoon

It's not until I ad to think about the lyrics to songs that I realized that I didn't really know all the lyrics for majority of songs. Sure, I can make up a bunch of them and kind of muddle together words; and I could only think of three songs that I maybe knew and this was the one I could go through first without being prompted by the music. It also helps that this song doesn't have too many lyrics.

I am trying to do this so it'll carry over to LJ. I did read up on the post about LJ's current problems and it's just making me really aim towards doing my LJ stuff during non-peak hours and just making an early private post and then reposting it by copy when it's due. Also, this is cutting into my fic reading time because I usually do some marathon reading from 8pm-midnight.

Day 07 - A song that reminds you of a certain event

Tonight will be a twofer since I skipped yesterday, also because I'm having a hard time narrowing down my choices.

A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke
When I was seven or eight, it was a New Year's Eve and just before midnight my father put in the cassette tape and my parents danced together to this exact song. It was like the entire world narrowed down to them and this song with this line 'It's been too hard living, but I'm afraid to die' circling in my head. This was the first time I really paid attention to lyrics and let them be more to me than what they had ever been. Sam Cooke, ladies and gents.

Bye Bye Bye by *NSYNC
If you are a certain age, you probably remember when *NSYNC were everywhere and this dance was all over. My friends and I had epic conversations about BSB vs *NSYNC and I watched TRL for video premieres and recorded the MTV Awards on my VCR and then shared it with my classmates in our black market at our tiny private school. All those events are not what I most tie to this song, it's this: sitting in a cramped van at night, riding from Orlando, and listening to the first cassette tape I'd ever bought for myself for the entire trip. It was a little taste of pop liberty.

I'm so feeling tempted to do a Remember When Mix. This is getting ridiculous
wishfulclicking: cassette unlooping (music: overandover)
Day 06 - A song that reminds of you of somewhere
Boston by Augustana

Boston is my dream place. I spent a summer there and fell in love and I still have plans on going back there at some point. Not only am I linking to the original song (in *m4a) but I'm also going to share the acoustic version.

Day 05 - A song that reminds you of someone
I Don't Know - Lisa Hannigan

This one was the most difficult so far, mostly because memorable music is so wrapped on what I'm feeling and experiencing that I don't have many songs that remind of people involved in my life. It's tangential at best.

But here it is:
There was a boy that made me think that every love song written was about our future; I had never felt so deeply about someone before and the entire experience had me more petrified than anything. His apartment was on the way to my apartment (I swear!) and whenever I'd drive by I'd think about stopping by or something else ridiculous.

//this song fits in the sense that while I did know a lot about that guy, I craved for more//

Day 04 - A song that makes you sad
Where Have You Been? by Manchester Orchestra

Just listening to this song pulls down my mood, and there may have been a night when I was already down and then got the the part I can hardly see what's in front of me most days, and those days too and clutched my pillow and cried a bit until I fell asleep with the song on repeat.

I'm really going to try and have a different artist for each song, but no promises
wishfulclicking: thumper from bambi (thumper LOL)
Day 03 - A song that makes you happy
Somebody to Love - Glee Cast

Looking through my library I realized that I don't really listen to music that much when I'm in a great mood, and often music doesn't really make me feel any emotion, it's more often a reflective support of what I'm currently feeling. Still, it was between three songs and because I have just recently had the Glee Soundtrack on constant repeat and spent a lot of time singing along off key and smiling when this song came on, this song won out.
wishfulclicking: ursula shakes it (music: ursula shakes it)

Day 02 - Your least favorite song
Put Yo Hood Up (cover) by Set Your Goals

My weakness for covers has been documented before: I love the ridiculous ones and the ones that add something special. This one made me skip and almost regret my decision to buy this album. For anyone thinking that I should automatically regret buying Punk Goes Crunk, you haven't heard Lorene Drive's Hey Ya :)

It's difficult picking my least favorite song because I don't listen to things I don't like.

Yes, it is past midnight but I haven't slept yet and I spent most of my night doing house stuff. Also: the cool thing about box.net is that you can listen to the track without downloading, so click the link and test out the song if you want before saving it.
wishfulclicking: man in black and white pulling back a curtain to show moving sky (music: makes you feel different)
Day 01 - Your favorite song
Blindness by Metric

Choosing my favorite song was something extremely difficult to do; I don't just have one favorite song and when I went through my Top 75 via Itunes I was stuck in a game of 'this one, no this one!' until I came to an end. So Blindness is my favorite song right now at this moment: I'm playing it often, it has lyrics that make me pause and rewind and want to engrave on my headstone (if I were to have one of those), and it picks up a bit so I can dance around in my poorly lit room too.

After every ten songs, I'm going to post a zip file if anyone wants to do a bulk download. I'm using box.net so the files shouldn't go anywhere unless I delete them

New Mixtape from Lupe Fiasco

I know of at least one Lupe fan on my flist

wishfulclicking: man in black and white pulling back a curtain to show moving sky (gaga in black)
Bad Romance continues to be my favorite right now, and I think it was a good choice for a lead single. I do miss the clapping that was in the video.

Alejandro is growing on me. It's so dramatic.

Monster-- okay, I would love a music video with different kinds of monsters in it, and Gaga dancing with a zombie!

Speechless -- I can't explain it but it reminds me of Bonnie McKee's Somebody just a bit. I like it.

Dance in the Dark -- I like the middle/end the best.

So Happy I Could Die -- it's good. I need to listen to it some more.

Telephone -- how much do I wish this was the latest video and not videophone? Is it too much to hope for a video for this too, kind of like a companion to Videophone?

Teeth -- Fighting with Bad Romance to be my favorite. It puts me in the mind of Ramalama Bang Bang, and if someone doesn't make a vid of Vampire Diaries to this, IDK if my fannish life will be complete.

Anyone else have thoughts on it?

day 01 | a song
Help I'm Alive - Metric I downloaded this album a while ago but never got around to listening to it and then I was going through a playlist of songs I hadn't heard yet and fell upon this one. Love the simplicity of the lyrics and Emily Haines' delivery.

choosing this one was kind of difficult )

day 03 | a book/ebook/fanfic
books make me rambly, ok )
day 04 | a site
Jezebel -- a decent sight for snappy commentary on issues, fashion, pop culture, etc. I really enjoy the Mad Men recaps.
Gizmodo -- Cool updates on upcoming tech. I like to window shop via computer, ok.
Monkeysee -- Love this blog's commentary on different pop culture stuff. Also served a nice piece of WTF to NBC with the Southland cancellation.
Alice and Kev -- really touching Sims3 story. It made me want to play the game more.
I Wrote this for you -- I kind of adore the writing and pictures of this blog. One of my favorite posts was actually the April Fools' one, but that's just me.
Online Fandom -- good discussion on different kinds of fandom. Sporadic posting though.

Why yes, I am a dork who loves some covers and random instruments that are played in dorm rooms.
day 06 | a quote
day 07 | whatever tickles your fancy
wishfulclicking: man in black and white pulling back a curtain to show moving sky (charlotte sometimes)
Today I was talking to some kids (8 and 11) and the 8 year old asked me if I was still in high school. I told him no and then he asked me if I was a parent. On the outside I gave a chuckle and said no, in my head the litany of HELL NO WTF!!! was on a cycle. Me? A Parent. Not anytime soon.

After I tell the 11 year old my real age (22), she wrinkles her nose at my ancient years and then says I am lucky. I ask her why and bite my tongue to stop myself from being one of those older people who swear that time flies by so fast and all your days leave while you're busy blinking. Because I don't want to be that person.

But she never did tell me why I was lucky.

On other notes: I decided to start that meme that floated around two weeks ago because I am the place where memes come to die and be resurrected. Also this song feels like a good fit for that brief story and it is one of my current favorites.

I'm ALIVE!!!!

Three days even isn't one of my longest breaks but it definitely felt longer. It was needed though. Amanda Palmer's twitter linked me to the Lefsetz blog and then I was just hooked.

Onward to other things--

Things that Make Me Happy (1/8)

1.  For the next eight days, post about at least one thing that makes you happy.
2.  Tag eight other people to spread the positivity.

One thing that has always been a constant source of joy for me is finding new music. Usually this happens when I'm not even expecting it, I'll have an album for over a year and never play it and then by chance I play it and I find music that I love (FOB), a friend burns me a CD (Jagged Little Pill), or a I catch part of a music video and I commit minor acts of accidental theft (Chevelle). No matter how I find the music, I'm always thankful for it.

A more concrete example of my happiness: Gaslight Anthem.

I first heard about them via jason tate from AP.net. Know what, how I heard about them is not the important part; the important part is that I did hear about them.

Why I love this right now: Gaslight excels at telling great stories with simple lyrics. The music sounds present too; and they used chains in part of their song. I'm kind of sucking at description at the moment, so let me share the goods.

Great Expectations --  Everybody leaves and I'd expect as much from you
The '59 Sound -- I was playing a show down the road when your spirit left your body...but I still know the song and the words
Miles Davis & the Cool -- watch me show my restraint by not posting so many lyrics from this one song; it's my favorite off the entire album  I never had a good thing, and I always had the blues

So those are my three favorite tracks off of the album, which I can actually listen all the way through without getting frustrated.
P.S. On a tangent, know what else makes me happy? Getting Gaslight Anthem tickets for $20 for May 3rd!

I tag EVERYBODY (but especially [livejournal.com profile] awkwardlurker because I know she doesn't mind memes) \o/

The above cut is the mix I did for the incredibly awesome story Like your favorite memory by [profile] sweetrecovery

Go read the fic!!!!
Seriously I remember looking for a Jon/Spencer epic with a tinge of angst and little schmoop--the good kind--and that is totally what I got. It is an excellent story that handles the characterizations so well and everyone feels really fleshed out.

So pretend you don't see me posting but----I really wanted to do this on my 21st birthday but it completely escaped my mind because so much went down on that day. I know some other people on the f-list have recently turned 21 and this goes out to you too!

I'm 21 and I'm already wasted

(21 by The Starting Line)--download. this band is awesome

--still fanmixing--
wishfulclicking: man in black and white pulling back a curtain to show moving sky (Default)

So of course I would add new friends and then not post for days...

There was a meme floating around a couple of days ago that I signed up to do so here is that first:

Five 'P' songs on the IPOD

P is for Penelope by This is Ivy League
Perfect by Alanis Morissette
Plush by Stone Temple Pilots
Paper Planes by M.I.A. -- this song is the inspiration for my current name
Pilot 76 by Charlotte Sometimes -- I really love this album. Also, did anyone else catch her video on TRL today?

There is another meme I want to do about the soundtrack to my boring life...which I will probably do later.

So I may have signed up for a second fan mix....and I also may have not started it yet :)

On that note, I will not be posting until the 7th because I need to finish this fan mix. I am pretty sure that this one will not take as long as the first because I find that I go faster on the second go round.  I will try to keep up with the f-list, but it is sort of hard because you guys keep on being awesome while I am away from the internet :)

*I have all of these albums except for M.I.A. so if you guys want them I can upload the whole albums as *.zip files.

So last week I was sort of MIA when it came to the Livejournal and the only reasoning I can give is Harry Potter reared its awesome head and sucked me back in for a while. Harry Potter fandom was totally my gateway into all the insane greatness that is fandom. HP introduced me to MPREG, x-made-them-DO-IT, and it made the whole rivals really want to get it on a fannish reality for me. Before HP I used to be in all these schmoopy best friends --> lovers ships (and I still am), but the power that was Harry/Draco was just to much for me to resist.

All last week? I was at Harry/Draco Worldcup and it was awesome. There are some really excellent fics in the batch----so if you used to read HP and were a H/D fan then you should really go check it out.

Last week I mentioned some music escapades and I said I was going to post some new music. ( I may have said I would do it for my next post....ummmm let's just practice selective amnesia and forget about it :) CLICK ON THE CUT FOR SOME TUNES!!!!
