Early Suspicions: Gentlemen

This is more for me to reference if I guess it right and would like proof.
Reading the Gentlemen, so far:
Maybe the teacher did murder Tommy and have the body in the barrel, but it all seems rather easy and it feels like I'm being led there.
But halfway into the book and it's almost too late to start another plot so that looks like that's it.
But it all could be a fake and Tommy is missing but not in any danger and the boys are put through the paces, similar to Crime and Punishment.
I'm thinking what if they commit a murder out of fear that Haberman did hurt Tommy and then are proven wrong, but now they're guilty of a real crime; but still, it's too late to fully develop that unless this is setting up for the main character to reveal himself to be in jail.
