So 2013 is way gone and I wanted to take a moment and look back and use these spreadsheets I've been half using to track my media habits.
Fanfic/fandom - I posted nothing the past year; defaulted on yuletide (boo); but I did have some ideas so it's not all for nothing. 2014 should be better.
Fandom - Still adrift. It is not that I feel unable to experience that full on fandom feeling like I did years ago with bandom and Glee; it's just that things have not shaken that way. Against the wall, I'll say ASOIAF is my main fannish experience with me subscribing to multiple authors and reading a ton of fic in it, but I only engage discussions with my best friend because we marathon the show together. Season 4 is starting again so activity should pick up; and I am very interested to see how they continue to alter plots and characters.
Reading: Did not read nearly as much as I wanted to; going on memory, This is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz and The Queen's Thief were standouts for me for different reasons.
Movies: 118 films total.12,119 minutes; average rating 7.4. Longest film: Blue is the Warmest Color at 187 minutes. The shortest: Recess: Taking the Fifth Grade at 74 minutes, which also made me remember why I loved the series so much years ago and kind of sort of wanted future fic.
Highest rated films were:
Frances Ha - still love this film. It actually had so many features that should irritate me but put together, it left me totally charmed. Frances was a fully formed human and I loved how her friendship with Sophie was the main thing in her life and shaped so many of her actions. I bought this on blu ray, and if you knew my cheap ways, you would know how big of a deal it was.
Queen: Rock Montreal. Queen concert streaming on netflix. Freddy Mercury the only way I could see him.
A Separation: I came late and slightly skeptical to this because it had so much talk about it but this film lived up to everything I had heard about it. It's a drama with layers and strong performances all around and the conflicts are not straight and the narrative stands back and lets the audience see all and then leaves at this crucial point, that for such a small action, left me gasping. I hate unanswered questions but, in this, it is perfect.
Rust and Bone. One of the best depictions of someone dealing with a drastic life change I've witnessed; disability that is not a very special message; troubled people trying to connect; sexuality that felt so real; great performances. I saw this in a theater and left wowed.
Thirst. Excellent vampire film by Park Chan Wook. I watched this after Stoker and it just reignited my fantasy of Stoker having actual vampires; but enough of thinking on fantasy movies. There's humor but all the death and actions are not treated lightly. The ending is still one of my favorite things.
