I hadn't even thought about NBA RPF/Olympic basketball RPF but I would so read it. Sometimes when I'm watching the games, reading commentary, I think of like a HS AU because that's just what I do sometimes; I actually think of AUs for almost every live event I watch.
Hmmm for me: Pop Star RPF, Hip Hop RPF (I have a hard time having the line between them be so solid, there's just a lot of genre blend going on today especially among the most popular)
Chronicle (the film with the three guys getting superpowers then everything going to shit)
Pitch Perfect ( all girl a cappella group competing at college) though I haven't seen it yet but it looks like something I'm going to enjoy
Underemployed ( a new MTV show which had a premiere and is going to have a canon same sex relationship between to girls and they're both minorities--I didn't want to jump and call it a lesbian relationship because one of the characters could be bi and just having that relationship present among the others is a good thing--and the show deals with a group of post college graduates dealing with life after in a not so stunning economy and I can relate). My only concern with this is I don't know how much it will take off by nominating time so it may be a wasted space.
Possibilities: Don't Trust the Bitch in APT 23, Degrassi, Parks and Rec is probably too big, Awkward but based on the most recent ep with alternate universes, Another Earth, The Sound of My Voice (but those two films I don't think many watched).
MOst of all I need to write something before I sign up because I don't want to default! Do you plan your yuletide early?
Not Yuletide stuff: The U.S. open was interesting, the first half was okay but then as the field narrowed it got better. JMDP was really good and I think he has a chance to win another Slam; I wanted to have a Tyra Banks moment for Tsonga; I said last year within 2 years Murray would get a Slam but not necessarily Wimbledon, so that's one stat that won't be repeated for a while.
Do you think the way 4 different men won a Slam this year will be more of the trend? Not even the 4 who did but more of a spreading out?
What do you think of Azarenka? I think she has it in her to be a dominant force for some years because she's at a good age.
Do you watch doubles?
That's one too many but something will get whittled down if I go for it.
I actually think of AUs for almost every live event I watch.
Ha, that is adorable! And, yeah, I would read all the HS aus for basketball. :D
Oh cool, what pop and hip hop artists are you thinking of nominating? All your noms sound really interesting, though sadly I don't know too many of those sources!
I start planning my nominations basically as soon as the previous Yuletide is over, haha, but I don't start planning my story until the assignments are out and I know what my recipient wants. I need to have that info before I can really plan anything. Once I start brainstorming an idea I am pretty much stuck with it, I am not flexible or fast enough to do multiple stories or switch angles midstream or anything like that! :)
US Open was soooooo exciting! I am so easily excited though, I even love the early stages - I didn't think the first week was too boring actually, there were so many 5 set comebacks and stuff.
I'm really worried for Delpo because of his wrist - he played in Davis Cup against doctor's advice and then had to withdraw from the reverse singles. Delpo take care of yourself. :(((((
I would love for Novak and Murray to be the next big rivalry and uh maybe I ship it a little. /o\ Ahem anyway much as I love Fed, realistically his window is closing, and idk what to think about Rafa and his knees and :(((((( again for injured athletes. So yeah I think it seems realistic to think that Murray is going to be up there in contention next year along with Nole. It would be even better if some of those outsiders like Tsonga and Berdych and Delpo (IF HEALTHY D:) are going to be in the conversation more (apologies to Ferrer, love him but can't see him winning a major).
Vika's game (and headgame) has really become a lot more complete over the last 1-2 years, she definitely seems to have it together now, more so than Kvitova or her other peers. Masha of course is up there and mentally she's solid as a rock, but Vika seems to have her number when it comes to matches. I kind of love Vika in interviews and behind the scenes things, but then you hear all these nasty stories about her - she's always the player that makes ballkids cry, apparently - and professional journalists complain about her attitude too so idk...
Doubles is hardly ever broadcast here, is it the same over there? I am interested in an abstract way but honestly haven't seen enough to give a considered opinion.
Uh I just tl;dr'd all over your lj about my tennis feelings /o\ please hit me back with feelings in return!! Basketball thoughts also will be avidly consumed. :DDD
Oh, the HS/College AUs. Sometimes I think I'd prefer college AUs to have a wider range of ages.
On Pop Star AUs-- one of my main ideas was when Gaga and Beyonce were just releasing videos and working together and I really wanted a verse where Beyonce ran a criminal empire full of hot people, with a personal posse of hot model dudes and Gaga was some kind of cult leader of fashion squatters.
I also wanted a universe set in the music video of 'Run This Town' with Jay-z, Kanye West, and Rihanna.
I have read some Hip Hop RPF but the community seems more fragmented than bandom's and the interest comes in waves. Last year's Yuletide served up some good stuff.
Tennis Thoughts are always welcome! I'm in the basketball hiatus and don't really care for a lot of the chatter until stuff happens. Derrick Rose cried when talking about his injury and I'm just glad I was some place alone when I tried to watch the video. I hate athletes getting injured!
The first week was so much in the U.S. Open and ESPN didn't really show a lot of the matches I wanted on tv at first but they did have everything streaming on the U.S. Open site. Lisicki going out early was kind of a bummer because I started liking her from last year's Wimbledon. The WTA and ATP seem ripe for the top players playing exciting matches and with the Slams not being definite sure bets. Those women you mentioned do seem to be the ones to beat and they give great matches against each other. IDK if Kvitova can get up there again, I don't feel crazy about if things fall a certain way Lisicki could (maybe if she got some more consistency?). I have heard those things about Azarenka; but I haven't heard anything lately about her so perhaps she's grown a bit. I like her interviews and her whole aura with the hoodie and the headphones and when she talked about what she listened to I wanted to make her a mixtape.
Did you see the JMDP match vs Nole? It was amazing. It totally didn't feel like a straight set loss. Hopefully he protects his wrist and goes on another run. Tsonga was so disappointing--that match was flat and idk if he was carrying a niggling injury or what. Hopefully he can pull it together because he can challenge Novak and Murray and Federer, I just don't know how he would respond if after beating one, he'd hit the other? I remember in the last year's Wimbledon he took our Federer but then hit the Novak wall. I totally meant to message you about Rafa when the news hit. There was an article talking about him kind of adopting Serena Williams' schedule so he could be at all the big Slam events. No matter what I do hope he can come back to his full level because the big events don't feel the same without him and it's so early.
So looking into the future early crop...what younger players impressed you and seemed like perhaps the next generation? Raonic, Tomic (confuses me because he can be so good but then other times not and then doesn't seem to care that much), I thought Dolgopolov was younger than he actually is. On the WTA side: Robson? Stephens?
I can watch Doubles on the U.S. Open site and ESPN would show them on TV if Americans were playing or if it were the finals or a big player was in them, like they showed Clijsters final mixed doubles match and part of the Williams' Sisters loss but they showed the entire mixed doubles final on CBS.
Is there even a hip hop rpf community? There kind of was one back in the days of popslash, mostly it was centred on Eminem and the Shady/Aftermath stable - I dabbled in the fringes with Em, 50 Cent, The Neptunes and the like - and I know during bandom there was this kind of small wave of Kanye, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Lupe, Rihanna etc... but there's never seemed to be a centre, or not one I can find anyway. Uh tl;dr do you know where I can find more hip hop stories? :D
I couldn't finish the D Rose video, it was too emotional. :(
Yes, Lisicki! <3 She was such a break out star in the 2011 grasscourt season. I loved watching her at Wimbledon last year. Too bad she's disappeared this year. I really miss Andrea Petkovic too, though tbh it's kind of for shallow reasons - I think her game is good not great, but she's always such fun and good value as a personality.
I hope Vika has grown up a bit. I really want to like her! LOL at the mixtape... did you see her partying on with Redfoo after the US? They were tweeting to each other about doing shots at 3am too. Hilarious! <3 http://www.tennisgrandstand.com/archives/15019/
I watched about half Delpo-Nole, but completely by chance - the US open has the WORST timezones for me, but I got sent home sick with the flu from work that day hahaha Idk why I'm laughing because I really was quite ill that day. But I'm grateful I got to see part of that match. Apparently the other really good one was Tipsarevic-Ferrer, which I followed breathlessly on twitter and cursed timezones again.
Young guns:
Raonic seems the most consistent and steady, but he's not made it very deep into the Slams so far. Will be interesting to see how he goes next year.
Tomic has a real attitude problem, he really annoys me and makes me frustrated that he represents my country. Gah! I even like Ryan Harrison better than Tomic - at least Ryan actually seems to CARE.
Dolgopolov is a touch older, yes, but by far my favourite of the 'new' generation. I just love his game, his whip-quick serve and the mix of slice/dice/junkball with power hitting. And off court he's so hilarious, he's into gangster rap and fast cars and argh I just want to know all the Dolgo things. /o\
Donald Young... I just feel really bad for Donald Young. :((((
Sloane Stephens YES, I love her game! and she's so personable.
Laura Robson I admit I didn't really follow her at all prior to the olympics but she has obvs been on such a roll since then. If she can back it up (and not just fade away, Melanie Oudin style...) that will be awesome. Also, if she gets into a budding rivalry with Heather Watson that drives them both to better and better things, I am also all for that. How great would it be for British women's tennis to have a resurgence just as Murray comes into his own?
It's kind of weird and sad how doubles used to be its own legitimate thing and now it's like the appendix to singles. Maybe if coverage was better...?
Ditto wheelchair tennis but x10. After watching some at RG and Wimbledon, I am more impressed than ever at what a cool sport it is and I wish there was more attention paid to it. I don't think they even report the champions let alone the scores on sites like tennis.com. :(((
I have never had the pleasure of watching wheelchair tennis; at most I've seen Beyond the Baseline tweet about it and maybe have a news article about the champion. It's a fault of mine that I've never really paid attention to it. Have you see the thing with NBC how they are probably going to lose the rights to the Paralympics because they failed so much in promoting it? At most they had like an hour highlight and very little streaming? I don't know if they news hit international like the complaints about the Olympic handling by NBC.
If coverage was better for Doubles, I think without having the major stars participate, Doubles could be bigger of a thing. The Bryan Brothers get a lot of earned attention and lately Errani and Vinci are getting props for being a standout doubles team. ESPN made some noise about Ryan Harrison and his brother, Christian, for going so far but more of the pressure on Harrison is to prove himself in Singles. During the Olympics Murray and Robson got attention but they were in the home nation.
Somehow I had forgotten about Watson though I thought she was so cute during Wimbledon! Like you said, hopefully she and Robson get some sort of rivalry going on because it would make the both of them better.
You reminded me of Donald Young and then I felt sad again. I absolutely hated it when P McEnroe was just so harsh on him during his loss to Federer. C'mon, it's Federer, what else was supposed to happen? I don't know how Young and the USTA are supposed to work together when there seems to be such animosity between them.
Tomic is so aggravating! I had to chuckle at your exasperation at him representing your country. Harrison bothers me a bit but I'm holding out hope he can get it together and calm down a bit.
Isner, idk man, I think he's in the spot where his potential needs to pay out more and he needs to get better about managing himself to wrap up his matches faster and stop falling off so much in five sets.
Red Foo from LMFAO definitely caught my eye. Vika really seemed much looser this Open, it was nice to see.
On the Hip Hop RPF community: I don't actually know if there is a definite one. There was one community I followed a year or two back but it was on LJ and fannish movement has dispersed a bit and these things come in waves. Almost every Yuletide there is some Hip Hop RPF recently--usually within six degrees of Kanye West. I haven't ventured on tumblr too much though (and a quick scan shows nothing under the Hip Hop RPF tag).
It's kind of a chicken and egg, with wheelchair tennis, do they not cover it because no one cares or is it the other way around? Tbh I never really noticed what I was missing until I saw it for real, and now it's a bit of a noticeable gap in coverage.
Yeah and with the Williams sisters as well - given all the boo-hooing about the end of an era in singles maybe US networks can give more coverage to doubles now? Ah well, we can hope...
Slightly irrational I know, but ever since I saw an interview with Heather Watson where she named Chris Brown as one of her favourite musicians, I have been a bit disappointed in her. LOL. She's only, what, just 20? There is time for her to learn better.
Poor Donald Young. Given the relationship with the USTA seems uh uncomfortable, seems like the best thing for him would be to get a proper coach. Sigh. If only things were that simple, right?
It's getting very frustrating with Isner. He really should be able to do more with his game. He seems like a cool dude, though.
Thanks for the link! I will have to try that fic. I usually like reading whatever gigantic has to write in any fandom. :)
One of my possible yuletide noms was Drake - I just want to know more about his creepy Aaliyah obsession. It's simultaneously weird, disturbing and fascinating to me. And uh oh I just had a thought about Drake with Nicki roleplaying Aaliyah... I hate my own brain sometimes. (buti'dreadit.)
gigantic also has a nicki/drake fic but it's not a role playing one. Your idea does sound fascinating though. I try to filter out about half of what Drake (and most artists actually) says but his Aaliyah thing makes me pause. I understand intense fandom but I still want him to tone it down just a bit.
The Chris Brown favorite musician thing I equate to announcing Polanski is your favorite director, even if it is true the feelings it inspire is not worth the public announcement of it; and I just don't rate CB's contributions on the same level of Polanski's. Now I'm thinking of R&B's weak field right now in the popular sphere.
I do think they could show more highlights of wheelchair tennis. If there weather delays, show some feed of it, highlights at least. Do a slow build. It could work.
