Grammy and Musical Memories

The Grammy Awards announced their nominations last night during some ridiculous concert and I had the following to say about them:

* Best New Artist felt a little like a joke but I'm not going to get all righteous here because I lack the energy. Though I think it's between Duffy or Adele.

*I'm pretty ambivalent towards Coldplay. But I want Radiohead to win most of their awards.

* I hope Flo Rida wins nothing and goes back to roast in The Sunshine State.

* Lupe Fiasco should win something because I honestly believes he deserves it with his album. I'm afraid he might get overshadowed by Jay-z, Lil Wayne, etc; but still, I can hope.

*Katy Perry got nominated for I think Pop Song, but I really can't bring myself to care. I'm pretty much past indignation (well the very little I had); and if Out could put her on their cover for Out 100 (which deserves one big dose of WTF!), then why shouldn't the grammy people nominate her? 'I Kissed A Girl', despite what you think about it, was a severely  popular Pop song, and Pop songs are supposed to be popular, so yeah there is the nomination.

I remember last year's Awards and how I vowed to stop watching. Before the nomination special (which why! I wanted Criminal Minds!!!) I thought my negative feelings had waned; but that was false. Because after having to go through the hosting abilities of LL Cool J and Taylor Swift (which why do people keep on tossing LL Cool J at people, he had his moment and I really wished he would move on with grace and just stop.) for about ten minutes (because that is all I could take before I fell asleep and looked up the nominations online), I have to admit that I'm staying firm on not watching the show.  I can understand the niceness of having your peers recognize how great you are, but it just seems sort of secondary. I find a Grammy to be close to pointless now as a music consumer.

But I wanted to take a moment and reminisce when I used to be in tune with the masses with music. I was 13 and I went and bought No Strings Attached on cassette (the equivalent of the 8-track for our day) on a secret trip to the mall. I listened to it on my Sony Walkman/Radio all the way home and swooned when they sang 'This I Promise You'.  I used to be able to track my music tastes right along with the BillBoard 100 charts and mention how I actuallly enjoyed most of the music on the charts. I used to actually listen though the radio and record certain songs on cassette because I loved them that much. I used to love the radio stations.

I've probably just gotten old. Now, I'm all curmudgeonly and just mention how teenagers have most of the purchasing power for objects like music, because most of them don't have bills to worry about. Also how so many people don't have to buy music now when downloading is prevalent, and how brief most music careers are being set up now. (Really, when the bottom line is a ring tone/a single track being downloaded on I-tunes, then the album is not the main goal anymore, as it is the single--which has pros and cons). Now I get most of my music recs from online through people and I mostly just watch Fuse, when I can. I just find the music that I love and listen to that and I give random artists a chance, usually if they have good lyrics. I'm not listening to completely esoteric things and saying they are the best thing ever; and I don't see obscurity as a sign of good music, but I no longer can say I am riding the popular music wave.

***Sidenote*** MTV--I hope you burn in flames with these current new shows. Bromance, really? I would probably catch a peek if there was the sort of bromance that Ronnie and that southern guard had, but I know I will probably not see faux sexual acts on the screen, so count me out. MTV really needs to change it name now since they only play the insane 'mixed' clips on FNMTV at ridiculously early times in the morning--and they seem to enjoy replaying the same ones on the hour.
